MEMPHIS GROUP GATHERING

THE HICKS FAMILY, TN (China)

We had a wonderful 1st Birthday party!!  We are so blessed to have her home to celebrate this milestone!!

She is doing wonderful and is progressing very well.  She has graduated from the army crawl to crawling on all fours now.  Just last week, she started cruising the furniture.  She is really taking off walking, as long as she has our hands.  Every now and then, she gets brave and lets go of one hand.

We are having lots of fun with her.  She is such a joy and quite the little show-off.

THE WILLIS FAMILY, TX (Russia)

Thank you so much for everything!  It has been such a pleasure working with you and CHI during my adoption process.  Here are a few pictures of my little Jonathan.

THE SMERZ FAMILY, TX (Russia)

I just had to share the pictures of Ryan's outfit this year for Trick or Treating in our neighborhood. Ever since we went to London this summer he has asked to be Big Ben for Halloween. We think it turned out pretty great.

THE HETHCOX FAMILY,  TX (Russia)

Hey!  Just wanted to give you a quick update.  All is going well!  At church on Sunday, we sang the song "Find Us Faithful".  As I sang, I was overcome with emotion.  The chorus of this song is:

May all who come behind us find us faithful.

May our love and our devotion light their way.

May the footprints that we leave, lead them to believe,

And the lives we live inspire them to obey.

Oh, may all who come behind us find us faithful.

This song was sung at our wedding nearly 8 years ago.  It's the first time that I have heard it since returning with our precious Lauren.  We began praying 8 years ago for the precious children that we would one day have.  Now, that dream is a reality!  Thanks!

Lauren is doing great.  She adores her brother and Nathan adores her.  We couldn't ask for more!  When people ask how we chose to adopt internationally, we tell them that we went to an informational meeting to learn more about the international adoption experience and fell in love with the agency, CHI.  Then, we prayed and knew that God was leading us to Russia.  Thanks for being faithful in doing your part to unite families!

THE SHOEMAKER FAMILY, TN (Russia)

The first two Operation Hope 2005 families returned in time for Thanksgiving!

THE GRIGGS FAMILY, TN (Russia)

Thinking of you and wanted to send recent photographs of Matthew, Michael, and Mary Katherine.  All three are doing well.  Matthew and Michael are having a good school year.  Mary Katherine's  new and favorite things to say is, "Hurry up, Mommy!"  They are the joys of my life.  Thank you for everything you have done for our family.

THE  WEDDLE FAMILY, AR (China)

This is Raeghan Rose FuRun Weddle. As you can tell she is doing wonderful, she is so different than the one year old I got that couldn't hold her self up, she is now 21 months old and is a typical little girl full of wonder and always into something.

THE SHEPHERD FAMILY, FL (Russia)

Just wanted to introduce our son!  He was born Sept. 30, 2004. He is healthy with 8 1/2 teeth and very thin hair.  Enjoys his food.  He seems to like us also.

THE GATTEN FAMILY , TN (Russia)

Hi!  My name is B. J. Gatten, and my husband David and I adopted our daughter Lauren one year ago with your help and support.   We traveled to Novokuznetsk last August with two other families to meet our babies for the first time.  Recently all three families met in St. Louis to celebrate our one year anniversaries!

Here's a photo of us from that special weekend together - the family on the left is the Zahners of Marceline, MO - Tina and Brad with daughter Georganne (adopted from Novokuznetsk in 2002) and son Isaac (adopted last October).  The family in the middle is the Baneys from Tulsa, OK - Nancy and son Nicolas (adopted last September), along with cousin Dalend who traveled with us to Novokuznetsk and back!  My husband David, Lauren and I are on the right; we live in Brentwood, TN.

All our children are doing just great, and they had a wonderful time playing together at the Magic House and Chuck E. Cheese in St. Louis.  We hope to make these reunions an annual event - we're all in this together forever now!

Thanks for helping us be families!

THE PATTON FAMILY, TN (China)

I had so many worries about my trip to China.  Would my luggage get lost?  Would my baby like me?  Would it be frightening?  Would the language barrier be too big?  Well, all of those fears easily disappeared.  All of the flights on Northwest were fine.  I booked the adoption fare and had no problem.

When we arrived in Beijing, the CHI staff members were waiting for us. We had a delay in Japan because of flight congestion, but the staff members were willing to wait until we got there.  The CHI staff collected our luggage and delivered it and us safely to our hotels.  The sightseeing the next two days was great.  It rained, but I was glad. Why?  Because it cooled us off!

When we got ready to go to our provinces, the CHI staff again had our luggage taken to the airport. We were lucky.  We got Lina as our guide.  She accompanied us to the airport and to our province.  We went to Anhui.  It was a small group of six families.  We were met in Hefei by our city guide, Jane.  Again, luggage and families were safely delivered to our beautiful hotel.

The next day we got our beautiful daughters.  Mine was the only one that cried, and boy did she cry!!!!  However, by the end of the day, she was MINE!!!!!

We had several interesting sight-seeing tours, including a visit to the orphanages.  There were two different orphanages involved with this particular set of adopting families.  My child came from a very poor city and a poor orphanage.  They told us they are planning on building a new orphanage, and that made me feel better. I hope and pray they will soon!!!

When it was time to go to Guangzhou, our luggage was taken to the airport.  Lina accompanied us, and we made it safely to the beautiful White Swan.  Shopping was great, and the area was absolutely beautiful.  Our visit to the U.S. Consulate was a breeze!!!

Again, when it was time to go home, our luggage was collected and sent to the airport.  We rode a bus there.  We had to check our luggage in when we got there.  I had to pay about $2.00 for overweight luggage.  Then we flew home!!

Lina was such a wonderful guide and made everything easy for us.  Jane was a great city guide too.  I was so impressed with CHI, and I felt we were treated as VIPs!!!!

As far as my daughter Gili is concerned, I have this to say.  I am so blessed to have been given the honor to call this beautiful, intelligent, hysterically funny, sweet, and wonderful child my daughter.  I couldn't have begged for a better match.  God knew what he was doing when he matched her to me.  She fits in so well with my family and friends.  I have never known love like this, and I will be forever grateful to CHI and China for making my dreams come true.  I am now a very luck Mommy!!!!!

THE LONGCRIER FAMILY, TX (China)

Koi is doing well.  Friday marked 1 month that we have had her.  We are so blessed.  When we got home to Dallas, she was not crawling, holding the bottle, putting anything to her mouth, but now she is and we are grateful.  She is even pulling up on everything she can.  The transition to having 0 siblings to 4 was overwhelming at first to her, but little by little she has attached to each one.  It has been awesome to see.

Our time in China was fabulous.  Our China coordinator Wendy Wu was awesome.
She made the trip great for us.  We will miss her dearly.  She was so thoughtful--all the group commented on that.  She thought of things before we knew we needed them, and then she just went out of her way to help us.

Anyway thanks again for the call and all the encouragement you have been to us.  Thank you for leading by example of how to be God fearing, loving family.  For that we are eternally grateful.

THE MITCHELL FAMILY, TN (Russia)

THE DUKES-REYNOLDS FAMILY, TN (Nepal)

Our last family finally came home….welcome home Amala!

Amala is an amazing baby, great personality.
She is alert always, and she is also mellow and adaptable.  She loves to watch her two big brothers, and she has started to laugh out loud, which as you know is about the sweetest sound on earth

(Editor's Note:   Due to political unrest, the Nepal adoption program closed last year.)

HEART OF THE MATTER CONFERENCE WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!

We had over 41 families attend the conference and learn more about parenting our children!  Thanks to all who participated!

A MESSAGE FROM BRENDA BARKER

I am hoping that you are enjoying a wonderful holiday season with your family and friends.  Please help us to remember those less fortunate with our "Wishes gifts" for children around the world.  And, of course there is no better time than now to start your adoption journey!

We don't want to burden you with a lot of information, but we do want to help you if you are looking for a way to adopt. If not, please let us know and we will regretfully remove your name from our newsletter.   E-mail me at my address below with any question you have.  I would love to hear from you.

On Christmas Day, I will be traveling to India, and then on to Hong Kong and China, with our oldest three daughters to their homelands.  I am sure we will have many wonderful stories to share on our return!
