Service with a passion...

CHI Is Accredited through 2010

As one of the world's leading advocates for quality services for children and families, the Council on Accreditation reaffirmed Children's Hope International's standards of excellence by once again honoring CHI with COA accreditation through 2010.  The detailed reaccreditation process investigates ethical practices, finances, service to families along with every aspect of organizational integrity.  "Children's Hope wants to assure their families that we follow 'best practice standards' and this independent investigation validates that," said Dianna Briner, Children's Hope Finance and Compliance Director.

COA is currently in negotiations with the U.S. State Department to become the only official accrediting agency for all international adoption agencies under the Hague Convention on Inter-Country Adoption.  The Hague is a multilateral treaty that provides a framework of safeguards of protecting children and families involved in inter-country adoption.

In the final report, COA noted that Children's Hope's best trait is their passion.
Our staff knows why we are here and display a passion to carry out our mission!

6-Year-Old Goes Into Jewelry Business
By Lynne LaMaster

She must be one of the youngest entrepreneurs around.  Taylor Davis, 6, has partnered with her mom, Karen Davis, to create and sell bracelets they call "Hearts Link Us".  These bracelets are designed to help kids have a trusted phone number wherever they go, in case they get separated from their parents or guardians.

New CHI Orphan Sponsorship Program

Since the origins of Children's Hope in 1992, we have given time and money to the needs of orphans wherever we have encountered them.  As we became increasingly aware of the immense needs of orphans worldwide, we made the decision to establish an arm of our agency that would encourage others to give as well, thus leveraging our own efforts.  We wanted to involve greater forces than our own in order to make a greater impact.

Our first few years of fundraising effort produced some results, but ultimately they were too meager to really meet the vast needs of orphans worldwide.  Direct mail, grant writing, one-time appeals, and "orphan train" events all had their moments of exhilaration, but overall they did not produce many dollars to give to children in need.  So, after much research and consideration, CHI has developed an orphan sponsorship program to meet the needs of thousands more orphans worldwide.

Quilted with Love

By Moya Smith

Claire Xiaolan Hope McKee was placed in the eager and loving arms of her parents on January 6, 2002, one day before her first birthday.

A year before our daughter was placed in our arms, they started to arrive.  Messages of love and good wishes to a child we held in our hearts.  Seven inch by seven inch pieces of cloth from Hong Kong and Newfoundland, from North Carolina and Pennsylvania, from British Columbia and Bangkok.

Why Some of Our Children Are Waiting...

Below is a synopsis of SMILE, a wonderful movie recently released on DVD:

Malibu, CA  -  Present day.  A smart, precocious and beautiful teenager named Katie (Mika Boorem) celebrates her birthday with her family and friends.  Her father, Steven (Beau Bridges), and mother, Bridgett (Linda Hamilton), have provided Katie with a lot of love and understanding, as well as a privileged life and all that a material world has to offer.

Halfway around the world in rural China, another teenage girl, Lin (Yi Ding), celebrates her birthday on the exact day, but her reality exists in stark contrast to Katies's.  Rescued as an infant, Lin has a severe facial deformity that prevents her from the freedom of ever showing her face.  Her adoptive father, Daniel (Luoyong Wang), has sacrified everything in his life in order to protect his beloved child.  They live with the bare essentials, in darkness and absolute simplicity.  But they are bonded with incredible love and closeness.  His only hope is that one day Lin can emerge from her self-imposed isolation to live in the world without fear and shame.

On his way home from work one day, Daniel sees a flyer that alerts him to a special medical program that provides reconstructive surgery to children in countries who cannot otherwise afford it.  It's called "Doctor's Gift" (based on "Operation Smile). Although she's reluctant at first, Lin agrees to accompany her father to a clinic in Shanghai.  However, due to a series of unfortunate events, Daniel is unable to get Lin to the clinic in time, and they miss out on the chance for surgery.

FCC-AZ

If you live in Arizona and are adopting from China, have adopted from China or are considering adopting from China, you may want to join the Arizona branch of Families With Children from China (FCC-AZ).  To learn more about this organization, click on the picture.

Letter from FCC-AZ

Dear FCC-AZ members,

Many AZ families know about our Families With Children From China support group and have also joined the FCC-AZ Yahoo Group.  The group is a wonderful, dynamic place to share adoption and non-adoption information, ideas, photos, view a calendar of events and to get to know other FCC families.  Monthly calendar events such as 2 Playgroups, Mom's Night Out, and the Waiting Families meetings are posted on the Yahoo Calendar and members can be sent reminders of these events.  All upcoming events are also posted on the calendar for quick reference at anytime, which comes in handy if you have misplaced your FCC newsletter.  It really is a great way to stay in touch with FCC-AZ.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite those members that may not know about the FCC Yahoo group or may have been invited and had the invitation expire, a chance to join.  The Yahoo Group members would love to have you be a part of our group!

If you would like to be sent an invitation to join the FCC-AZ Yahoo Group, please email me (Kathy Wong), moderator of the Yahoo Group, at kkhwong@cox.net and I will be happy to send you an invitation to join.

If you are not yet a member of FCC-AZ and would like to join, you may join online at http://www.fccaz.org or contact Ray Cooper, FCC Membership Director at ray_cooper@yahoo.com for a membership form to be sent to you.

Thank you and have a great day!

Kathy Wong
