May
18, 2005-International
adoption agencies in the United States received
official word today on whether they can continue to
find homes for Russian orphans.
Children’s Hope International is one of the first
agencies to be granted re-accreditation from the
Russian Inter-Department Commission on International
Adoption. Only 23 of the 51 agencies placing Russian
children in American homes received the
re-accreditation necessary to continue adoptions.
“We are so exited to have received re-accreditation so
we can continue our mission of finding loving homes
for orphans from Russia,” said Sue Ellison, CHI
Russian Program Director.
This re-accreditation announcement comes after a
series of reorganization moves within the Russian
Government that caused nearly a year delay. Many
people adopting from Russia ran into a longer than
normal process, since in most regions, agencies could
not complete adoptions until the accreditation process
was complete.
Similar to many agencies, the number of Children’s
Hope families finalizing adoptions from Russia this
year was off 75% through April. Over the past three
years, CHI has averaged around 20 adoptions per month
from Russia. In the first four months of 2005, CHI
families have finalized 28 total adoptions (7 per
month).
Children’s Hope has placed over 1000 Russian children
since 1996. With 255 adoptions in 2003 and 225 in
2004,CHI became the third largest agency finding homes
in America for orphans from Russian.
