Nomad (The Warrior): Kazakh at the Theater!

Simply put, Nomad (The Warrior) is a film about a young Kazakh boy who grows up to unite the warring tribes of Kazakhstan. However, this movie is so much more than that. This movie, filmed entirely in Kazakhstan using Kazakh actors, is a glimpse into the cultural makeup of historical Kazakhstan. While not intended to be a historically accurate, Nomad does interweave aspects of Kazakhstan’s origin into the story while wonderfully encapsulating the national pride that the Kazakh people are known for. It is a graphic portrayal of the struggle that ultimately resulted in a unified Kazakhstan.

This film is highly recommended for anyone interested in learning more about the history of Kazakhstan, it’s culture, and it’s people.

Jeff Morris, Kazakhstan Program Coordinator and Social Worker

Plot summary: Nomad is set in 18th-century Kazakhstan, a vast, pitiless region of austere and terrible beauty, and tells the story of a boy destined to one day unite the three warring tribes of the country who have survived and fought for centuries—against invaders, against their formidable enemies and amongst themselves. Nomad is Kazakhstan’s official entry, Best Foreign Language Film for the 79th Academy Awards. Directed by Oscar-winning director Milos Forman.

Rated R for violence, not child appropriate

World Premier: March 16, 2007 in limited theaters, March 30 expanded theaters

Watching the movie might spike a question:
If I am interested in learning a language prior to travel to Kazakhstan, should I learn Kazakh or Russian? As everyone within Kazakhstan does speak Russian, it is wise to begin learning some of the basic Russian words in order to clearly communicate in country. When you have submitted your dossier, Children’s Hope will mail you a long list of appropriate and useful phrases to learn prior to travel. Families are encouraged to purchase an Oxford Russian dictionary and phrase book prior to travel and to check the local library for Russian language tapes. Hearing the language will help with pronunciation, but as you would not likely use them in country, they are not necessary for purchase. Happy learning!
